![]() The advocates wanted to gain attention for their argument that city recreation centers should stay open overnight during cold weather. Wiederholt and the other advocates remained in the lobby even after staffers told them that the building was shutting down for the night. The center, which is named after Carla Madison, a Denver City councilmember who passed away in 2011, is open during the day but was closing at 9 p.m. Wiederholt and dozens of other people, including at least five experiencing homelessness, began filtering into the recreation center at 8 p.m. "It should be a 24-hour resource it's a no-brainer," said Jess Wiederholt, a member of Mutual Aid Monday, the homeless-rights advocacy group that organized the action. Bitter sweet. As the temperature hovered in the low teens before a dip into single digits on March 10, homeless-rights advocates staged a sit-in inside the Carla Madison Recreation Center at 2401 East Colfax Avenue. All in my opinion of course & repeat unfortunate experience as a new member. It doesnt take a degree to make things make sense. Im not going to go on cuz itll be too much.lets just say no one thought about the flow of things and they didnt hire anybody that could either. Having to beg them to put the shades down and of course they take their sweet time is getting old. Guess its rocking science to put the shades down when the suns highest so the bike area riders dont have to be blinded by it. They didnt plan for nowhere to stretch in the building as well so stretch at home before or after your work out unless youre okay with someone almost dropping weights on you or stepping over you constantly. FYI the parklot is small, plan to wait for a open spot during busy times cause of course the designers didnt plan that out. Signs for the parking lot, that the dog park folks CANT park in Rec Center small parking lot. Signs on classes so you know to get a cone to enter the class, signs on, sign up desk for classes SO you know you have sign up there. Need signs! Signs on elevator to say whats where. I know it’s not possible, but it would be perfect if it was twice as big. Front desk is chaotic, but I’m sure this will sort out after some time.Overall, it’s a very nice place, and I will continue to go often. It’s not necessarily cold, but it’s not warm. Avoid weekdays between the hours of 3-6pm if possible (lap pool is closed then too, for high school swim practice). I tried working out around 4:30 on a weekday, and it was as if the whole facility had turned into the halls of the high school next door. Locker rooms are clean and spacious, and have code lock systems on the lockers.Cons: It’s already super busy, and I don’t think it’s quite big enough to handle all the people. ![]() Have yet to try the yoga but have heard the top floor room is amazing with downtown views. Kid drop-off area is great as well, with attentive supervisors and new toys. Olympic bars and bumper plates, tower with TRX systems, foam rollers, and good quality machines in gym area. Amazing lap pool (better than a lot of expensive gyms in the area) and fun kid swimming area. Pros: Brand new, high quality facility with super affordable prices. Lets go for a walk, work out, and then grab a bite to eat. I like the look of the facility too, modern, clean lines.Great facility, and very close to home. ![]() Many views out to Colfax, or the downtown area. Large separate area for weights and fitness machines.Clean, bright interior. There is an area for family locker rooms too.Large gym with two (can be separated) full size gyms. Follow the yellow wall for the womens locker room, and the blue wall for the mens locker room. I do hope they put one in.Locker rooms are in the basement, but it doesnt feel like a basement. Not sure if there is a smaller hot therapy pool. Friendly staff too.Large 8 Lane lap pool. Patrons can use the high school parking lots too, but check on those hours first.Front desk is inside the front entrance, but rather large, so you should not have to wait long if you are buying a pass, need to check on a class schedule (which are on line). Plenty of people using the center too, nice to see.Decent private parking lot, so thats good. We worked out on the fourth day after it opened. Wonderful new Recreation Center for Denver Parks and Recreation.
